My favourite Swiss foods

I think it is about time that I list some of the best foods here in Switzerland. Things you must try! Of course, the cheese and chocolate are great, but there is more good, no, great stuff.

Here are some of them (not in any particular order)…

Wähe: Fruit waehe is the best, apricot, rhubarb, apple, cherry, plum. I made an apple one the other day too, pretty quick and easy.

Rivella: a soft drink made out of milk serum. I know, sounds yuck, but it truly is good. And pretty healthy as far as soft drinks go. Not too sweet. I like it! Comes standard, diet or with herbs.

Spätzli or Knöpfli: Pasta made with egg and flour. Very simple (though a little time consuming) and versatile. Mmmh. My grandmother makes the best ones. Here is a recipe.

Raclette: I love this grilled melted swiss cheese over potatoes. Mmmh.

Also great are the freshly baked loaves of crusty bread, gemischter salats (Aarau Badi makes the best one), bratwurst, fondue, bircher muesli, vanille creme, creme schnitte, ice tea… the list goes on… I also love the butter here, weird, I know, but it is made without salt and very creamy and oh so good. I am also a big fan of dark chocolate, the Frey Giandor dark; one of the best. Hence, the ever increasing chocolate index!

Michelle, you better be careful when you describe cheese with names… When you wrote raclette is “Swiss Cheese” I know you meant to say the right thing, but people could misunderstand you to think you mean Emmentaler (which does not work so well on a raclette grill).

Raclette is of course most of the time eaten with raclette cheese. See also the site http://www.raclette.co.nz for more info (link is from my name above) including recipes and a great book.

And bircher muesli, the real deal, ahh yum! And the chocolate! And… Ovomaltine bars!!!

What?!?!??! Rivella is MILK SERUM?!?! Not that I didn’t believe you, but um, yes, I didn’t believe you and I had to google it and I am sorry, you were correct… but by God, what the hell is Milk Serum? I have had Rivella once, well twice, tried two types at the same time, and they tasted like tea…

What I am most surprised about is that it didn’t affect my stomach because I am lactose intolerant.

Silly Swiss.. they find a way to slip cheese and milk into anything. Do you think that Rivella is just a clever way to use up the whey from cheese processing? :)

Mmmm! RACLETTE! In NZ we have it with Colby cheese which is delicious too… many cheeses taste great with potato. It doesnt matter as long as you enjoy this social meal with good company! Mmmm. I think my favourite food in Switzerland is Bärentatzen… I can eat packets of those and never get sick of them! Oh stop it Mich, you are making me hungry, again. hehe

In reply to Susanne, I know Raclette Cheese is traditionally used in Raclette, sorry, I should have made that clearer. Yeah and Missie, apparently there is Raclette cheese available in NZ. Just doesn’t seem to be in the local South Side (!) supermarkets. Will have to have another look.

Man……………I so miss Rivella!!! I love that stuff even if it is made from milk serum. And that yummy ovaltine chocolate. Think I’ll have to come and visit you sometime soon!!! xxx

Raclette cheese is available in our local supermarket. Made in Switzerland even. Only it is $52 per kilo, so yeah, we will just stick with Colby.

I grew up calling Gruyere “Swiss cheese” and that is what they call Gruyere in North America so it could get even more confusing Susanne!

We had fondue the other night with our Swiss friends Josua and Heidi. Heidi’s Mum sent over a packet of “Fondue Suisse” which was a mixture of Emmentaler, Gruyere and some kind of Tasty cheese and there was a wine flavouring apparently but no wine. I think it was a sort of dried cheese mixture – must have been for them to send it to NZ. You will probably know what this is Michelle. Anyone coming back to NZ is very welcome to bring some back for me (pretty please?), it was so yummy.

Rosti, Gemischte Salat, Schnitzel, Pastetli, Fondue, Heissi Maronni, Pretzli, Vermicelle, Giandor chocolate mmmmmmm Swiss food is so yummy!

And those yummy chocolate Sundaes – what are they called?
